🔹 Adverbs in English Grammar

An adverb is a word that modifies (describes):

  • A verb

  • An adjective

  • Another adverb

  • Sometimes a whole sentence

👉 It tells us how, when, where, how often, or to what extent something happens.


1️⃣ Adverb Modifying a Verb

It tells how an action is done.

  • She sings beautifully.

  • He runs fast.

  • They worked hard.


2️⃣ Adverb Modifying an Adjective

  • She is very intelligent.

  • This book is quite interesting.

  • He is too weak.

(Here, very / quite / too modify adjectives.)


3️⃣ Adverb Modifying Another Adverb

  • She runs very quickly.

  • He speaks quite clearly.


4️⃣ Types of Adverbs

🔹 1. Adverb of Manner (How?)

Answers: How?

  • slowly

  • carefully

  • beautifully

  • badly

Example:
He drives carefully.


🔹 2. Adverb of Time (When?)

Answers: When?

  • now

  • yesterday

  • soon

  • already

  • today

Example:
She will come tomorrow.


🔹 3. Adverb of Place (Where?)

Answers: Where?

  • here

  • there

  • outside

  • everywhere

Example:
Come here.


🔹 4. Adverb of Frequency (How often?)

  • always

  • often

  • usually

  • sometimes

  • never

Example:
She always speaks the truth.


🔹 5. Adverb of Degree (How much?)

  • very

  • too

  • enough

  • almost

  • quite

  • completely

Example:
He is very happy.


5️⃣ Formation of Adverbs

Most adverbs are formed by adding -ly to adjectives.

🔹 Important Exceptions

Good → Well
Fast → Fast
Hard → Hard
Late → Late

Example:
She sings well. (Not "good")


6️⃣ Position of Adverbs

🔹 After verb

He runs quickly.

🔹 Before adjective

She is very smart.

🔹 At beginning (time adverbs)

Yesterday, I met him.

🔹 Frequency adverbs (before main verb)

She always comes early.

But:
She is always happy.


7️⃣ Comparison of Adverbs

Like adjectives, some adverbs have degrees.

❌ He speaks good.
