🔹 Adjectives in English Grammar

An adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun.

👉 It tells us:

  • What kind?

  • Which one?

  • How many?

  • How much?


1️⃣ Examples of Adjectives

  • She is a beautiful girl.

  • He bought a new car.

  • I have three books.

  • This is a big house.

(Beautiful, new, three, big — all describe nouns.)


2️⃣ Types of Adjectives

🔹 1. Adjective of Quality (Descriptive)

Describes the quality of a noun.

  • good

  • honest

  • brave

  • beautiful

Example:
He is an honest man.


🔹 2. Adjective of Quantity

Shows amount (uncountable nouns).

Example:
I have little money.


🔹 3. Adjective of Number

Shows number or order.

  • one, two, three

  • first, second

  • many, few

Example:
She has two brothers.


🔹 4. Demonstrative Adjective

Points out specific noun.

  • this

  • that

  • these

  • those

Example:
This book is mine.


🔹 5. Possessive Adjective

Shows possession.

  • my

  • your

  • his

  • her

  • their

Example:
This is my pen.


🔹 6. Interrogative Adjective

Used with nouns in questions.

  • which

  • what

  • whose

Example:
Which book do you want?


3️⃣ Comparison of Adjectives

Adjectives have three degrees.

Example:

  • Ram is taller than Shyam.

  • He is the tallest boy in the class.


4️⃣ Formation Rules

🔹 One-syllable:

Add -er / -est
Tall → Taller → Tallest

🔹 Two or more syllables:

Use more / most
Beautiful → More beautiful → Most beautiful


5️⃣ Position of Adjectives

🔹 Before noun

She has a red dress.

🔹 After linking verb (is, am, are, seem)

She is happy.


6️⃣ Adjective vs Adverb (Important)

Adjective → modifies noun
Adverb → modifies verb

❌ She sings beautiful.
✔ She sings beautifully.


7️⃣ Common Errors

❌ More better
✔ Better

❌ Most tallest
✔ Tallest

❌ He is senior than me
✔ He is senior to me
