🔹 Voice Change (Active & Passive Voice) – Complete Guide

1️⃣ What is Voice?

Voice shows whether the subject of the sentence does the action or receives the action.

There are two types:

  1. Active Voice

  2. Passive Voice


2️⃣ Active Voice

The subject performs the action.

Structure:

Subject + Verb + Object

Example:

  • Ram writes a letter.

  • She sings a song.

  • They completed the work.


3️⃣ Passive Voice

The subject receives the action.

Structure:

Object + be verb + V3 + by + Subject

Example:

  • A letter is written by Ram.

  • A song is sung by her.

  • The work was completed by them.


4️⃣ Steps to Change Active to Passive

Step 1:

Make the object the subject.

Step 2:

Use correct form of be verb.

Step 3:

Use past participle (V3).

Step 4:

Add by + subject (optional in many cases).

🔵 Examples (All Tenses)

Present Simple

Active: She writes a letter.
Passive: A letter is written by her.

Present Continuous

Active: She is writing a letter.
Passive: A letter is being written by her.

Present Perfect

Active: She has written a letter.
Passive: A letter has been written by her.

Past Simple

Active: She wrote a letter.
Passive: A letter was written by her.

Future Simple

Active: She will write a letter.
Passive: A letter will be written by her.


6️⃣ Modal Verbs

Active: She can solve the problem.
Passive: The problem can be solved by her.

Active: He must finish the work.
Passive: The work must be finished by him.


7️⃣ Imperative Sentences

Command:

Active: Close the door.
Passive: Let the door be closed.

Request:

Active: Please help me.
Passive: You are requested to help me.


8️⃣ Interrogative Sentences

Active: Did she write the letter?
Passive: Was the letter written by her?

Active: Is she writing a letter?
Passive: Is a letter being written by her?


9️⃣ Sentences Without Object (Cannot Change)

❌ She sleeps.
❌ He runs fast.

(No object → No passive form)

🔹 Double Object

Active: She gave me a gift.

Passive 1: I was given a gift by her.
Passive 2: A gift was given to me by her.


🔹 People say / think / believe

Active: People say that he is honest.
Passive: It is said that he is honest.
Or: He is said to be honest.

❌ The letter was wrote by him.
✔ The letter was written by him.

❌ The work is doing by her.
✔ The work is being done by her.

❌ He is known by me.
He is known to me.


1️⃣2️⃣ Advanced Linguistic Note (Honours Level)

Passive voice is used when:

  • The doer is unknown.

  • The doer is unimportant.

  • Focus is on action/result.

  • In scientific & formal writing.

Example:
"The experiment was conducted in 2025."

Passive increases formality and objectivity.
