Gender in English Grammar

🔹 Gender in English Grammar

(From Basic to Honours Level Explanation)

1️⃣ What is Gender?

In English grammar, Gender refers to the classification of nouns and pronouns according to sex or the absence of sex.

Unlike many classical languages (like Sanskrit, Latin), English has a natural gender system, not a grammatical gender system.

2️⃣ Types of Gender in English

Traditionally, there are four types:

1️⃣ Masculine Gender

Refers to male persons or animals.

Examples:

  • man

  • boy

  • king

  • father

  • lion

  • actor

2️⃣ Feminine Gender

Refers to female persons or animals.

Examples:

  • woman

  • girl

  • queen

  • mother

  • lioness

  • actress

3️⃣ Common Gender

Refers to nouns that can be either male or female.

Examples:

  • teacher

  • student

  • child

  • friend

  • doctor

  • cousin

  • parent

Example:

  • The teacher is absent. (Male or female)

4️⃣ Neuter Gender

Refers to things without life.

Examples:

  • book

  • table

  • car

  • city

  • computer

  • tree

3️⃣ Formation of Feminine Gender

🔹 1. By adding –ess

actor → actress
lion → lioness
poet → poetess
waiter → waitress

⚠ Modern English avoids many “–ess” forms.

🔹 2. By changing word completely

king → queen
man → woman
boy → girl
husband → wife
brother → sister

🔹 3. By adding separate word

he-goat / she-goat
male nurse / female nurse

4️⃣ Gender-Neutral Language (Modern Usage)

Modern English prefers gender-neutral terms.

Old TermModern Term
chairmanchairperson / chair
policemanpolice officer
firemanfirefighter
stewardessflight attendant

6️⃣ Personification (Important for Literature Students)

In literature, inanimate objects may be given gender.

Examples:

  • The sun → masculine

  • The moon → feminine (sometimes)

  • A ship → “she”

  • Death → often masculine

  • Nature → often feminine

Example:

The ship lost her way in the storm.

7️⃣ Gender and Agreement

Pronouns must agree with gender.

Incorrect:
❌ Every student must bring his book. (Not fully inclusive)

Modern acceptable:
✔ Every student must bring their book.

Singular “they” is now widely accepted.

8️⃣ Advanced Linguistic Perspective (Honours Level)

English follows Natural Gender System:

  • Gender depends on biological sex.

  • Most nouns are gender-neutral.

  • Unlike French or German, English does not assign grammatical gender to objects.

Example:
French:
La table (feminine)
German:
Der Tisch (masculine)

But in English:
Table → Neuter

9️⃣ Common Errors in Gender

❌ The cow lost his calf.
