🔹 Articles in English Grammar
Articles are small words placed before nouns.
There are three articles in English:
Articles are divided into:
1️⃣ Indefinite Articles → A, An
2️⃣ Definite Article → The
1️⃣ Indefinite Articles (A / An)
Used with singular countable nouns when the noun is not specific.
🔹 Use of “A”
Used before words beginning with a consonant sound.
a boy
a pen
a university (yu sound)
a European country
Example:
He bought a car.
🔹 Use of “An”
Used before words beginning with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u sound).
an apple
an umbrella
an honest man (silent h)
an hour (silent h)
Example:
She is an engineer.
⚠ Important: It depends on sound, not spelling.
2️⃣ Definite Article (The)
Used when the noun is specific or already known.
Example:
The sun rises in the east.
The book on the table is mine.
